Here is a list of some important and suggested things to bring. For more advice, feel free to email a former intern.

  • long bed sheets, pillow, and blanket (or get them from Residential life)
  • cooking and eating utensils: fork, spoon, knife, plate, bowl, pot, pan, containers, etc.
There are some community pots and pans though. You can buy some at Fred's or Value Village.
  • TWO forms of ID (passport, social security card, driver's license, etc.) if you want to be paid.
  • phone card (to make long-distance calls)
  • a student ID (for discounted gym membership $50)
  • stereo and music (You might find a cheap stereo at Fred's or Value Village.)
  • clothes for ANY weather conditions from 90-degrees and sunny to 30-degrees and snowy
  • sports equipment such as frisbees and baseball gloves (can also be checked out from the dorm)
  • MOSQUITO REPELLENT (the more deet, the better)
You might want a mosquito headnet too if you plan on camping a lot, especially for the Brook's Range trip.
  • a good sleeping bag, pad, tent (or know someone with a tent), backpack, and daypack
You can also rent backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, and pads from UAF Student Activities Outdoor Adventures.
  • Bikes are all but essential. You don't have to have one, but it makes getting around A LOT easier. You can have yours shipped from home or take it as baggage on the plane (for a fee). Of course, you can buy one when you get here.
  • waterproof boots and good hiking socks
  • rain gear
  • water bottles (Nalgene is best.)
  • sunglasses
  • To cash or deposit your checks, you'll probably want a local bank accout. Most interns use the National Bank of Alaska. Their atms are all over (one in the Wood Center), and the checks and visa check card are free.
