Leslie Almberg, Ph.D. student in Volcanology; M.S., 2003 University of Alaska Fairbanks; B.S., 2001 University of Washington (Seattle).
University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, 903 Koyukuk Drive Suite, PO Box 757320 Fairbanks, AK 99775.
Phone (907) 474-6171, fax (907) 474-5618, E-mail: ftlda "at" uaf.edu

Leslie has just embarked on her second degree at UAF, a PhD in volcanology with John Eichelberger. The first project of her thesis will focus on work she began in Japan on an NSF funded science exchange program (EAPSI 2003). Using variations of vesicularity in drill core for 500,000 years of eruptive history at Unzen Volcano she hopes to relate changes in gas content over time to eruptive behavior.

Amanda Kolker
, INRA fellow and Ph.D. Student in Volcanology; B.A., 2000 Oberlin College.
Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, 903 Koyukuk Drive P.O. Box 757320 Fairbanks, AK 99775-7320
Phone: (907) 474-1925 fax: (907) 474-5618. Email: ftamk1 "at" uaf.edu

Amanda is interested in geothermal systems and their potential for energy use. Her PhD thesis will investigate geologic controls on subsurface heat and fluid transport in geothermal systems. She is looking at two high-temperature (volcano-related) geothermal systems; one that is actively being exploited for energy (Mutnovsky Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia) and one that is currently undeveloped but is a potential target for exploitation (Makushin Volcano, Unalaska Island, Alaska). Chena Hot Springs serves as Amanda's low-temperature geothermal resource and is very close to home, about 55 miles from Fairbanks. Plans are underway to establish a 400-kilowatt geothermal powered electrical generation system at the Hot Springs by 2008. Amanda aims to develop models of each of the three representative systems, demonstrating the circulation of hydrothermal fluids at various depths.

Joanna Malcolm, Ph.D. Student in Geophysics
Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, 903 Koyukuk Drive P.O. Box 757320 Fairbanks, AK 99775-7320
Phone: (907) 474-1925 fax: (907) 474-5618. joannam "at" giseis.alaska.edu

Tanja Petersen, Ph.D. student in Geophysics; M.S., 2000 University of Kiel, Germany
University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute 903 Koyukuk Drive Fairbanks, AK 99775.
Phone: (907)-474-6171, Email: tanja "at" giseis.alaska.edu

Tanja studies the seismicity of active volcanoes in order to gain insights into physical processes leading to volcanic eruptions. In June 2001, she started a PhD program by researching low-frequency seismic events at Shishaldin Volcano, Aleutian Arc, Alaska. Since moving to Alaska, Tanja enjoys the cabin life and all kinds of outdoor activities. Her fieldwork during the summer consists of helping the Alaskan Volcano Observatory with deploying permanent seismic networks around volcanoes. [Home Page]

Celso Reyes, MS student in Geophysics; B.S., 2002 Northern Arizona University.
Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, 903 Koyukuk Dr., P.O. Box 757320, Fairbanks, AK 99775-7320.
Phone: (907) 347-5517, E-mail: celso "at" giseis.alaska.edu

Celso came up from the deserts and highlands of Arizona to study volcano seismicity in Alaska's volcanic playground. He has spent a few summers in Yellowstone hiking around and being generally enthralled, and have spent much time in northern Arizona/ Utah playing in the desert. While at NAU, Celso received a space grant to work on an instrument that would measure heat flow on the surface of Venus. Here, his main project (still subject to change) is to examine the recent (and as of this writing - ongoing) tremor episodes at Okmok volcano, Alaska. Exploring, photography, making music, and learning all rank high on Celso's list of interests as he continually tests the boundaries between "geek" and "sheik" (not to mention the boundaries between "adventurous" and "stupid") [Home Page]
